Destination Marketing: A New Vision for a Changing World, by Timothy Schneider, Publisher, Association NewsLos Angeles, CA – July 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / As meeting and event planners—and the destinations that host their functions—are no doubt quite aware, the world continues to change at a rapid pace. In the meetings and events industry alone, changes include an increasingly volatile political landscape that can affect the ease of travel to and from events or a destination’s ability to gather the funds necessary to market their offerings; a dizzying array of new technologies that help destinations market those offerings to meeting and event planners; and a rise of the number of women in leadership roles at destination marketing organizations.

Destination Marketing Association International, the association that represents destination marketing organizations, is in the midst of its own dramatic transition, including a rebranding effort that will change the name of the organization to Destinations International in July. The move came after months of research and a renewed focus by the organization on serving members and included a new business plan that charts where the organization wants to put its emphasis in the year to come. Areas of focus include an increased effort on stronger advocacy for DMOs; more research on strategic planning and ROI; the need for education, standards and best practices; and the need for peer-to-peer networking.

This special supplement, produced in conjunction with DMAI, aims to outline a new vision for the future of our industry. It is our hope that the information found in the following pages will provide DMOs, meeting planners and event organizers with the insights and resources they need to successfully navigate through an ever-changing world.
