2014 / Newsmaker Alert / As we eagerly anticipate the signs
of spring, Finger Lakes Gaming
and Racetrack (FLGR) has begun the countdown to the 2014 thoroughbred
racing season. Opening Day is set for Friday, April 18, with a first race
post time of 12:35p.m.
After the opening of the
162-day season on April 18, pending final approval from the New York Gaming
Commission, Finger Lakes will run Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday
through early May. Five-day race weeks will begin with the addition of
Thursdays on May 15. Beginning the week of November 3, live racing days
will move to Monday through Friday through the conclusion of the meet on
December 5 with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27
when no racing will be scheduled.
There is also no racing scheduled
on Thursday, July 24 due to track maintenance.
First race post time will
be 1:10 p.m. daily with the exception of Fridays, which will be a 12:35
p.m. start through October 31. Beginning November 3, post time will move
to 12:15 p.m. each day to accommodate the end of daylight savings time.
Post time for Saturday, November 1 is yet to be determined based on the
schedule of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
2014 Stakes
The 2014 stakes schedule
features 15 events with purse levels estimated to total just over $1.1
million. The New York Breeders’ Futurity on Saturday, October 4 headlines
the schedule with an estimated offering of $200,000.
Other highlights of the schedule
include the 42nd running of the $150,000 (added) New York Derby on Saturday,
July 12. The New York Derby is the second leg of the Big Apple Triple for
New York bred 3-year-olds, which begins with the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont
Park (5/31/14) and concludes with the Albany at Saratoga in August. Finger
Lakes-based Tin Cup Chalice was the first and only horse to ever to sweep
all three legs of New York’s version of the Triple Crown in its 14-year
history, doing so in 2008.
For the tenth consecutive
season, FM Talk 92.1 WYSL and NEWSPOWER 1040AM will provide exclusive live
coverage of selected Finger Lakes stakes action, including the New York
Derby.
The stakes season begins
with the $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap (NY bred 3-year olds & up,
fillies & mares) on Saturday, May 17.
