Lake Mead National Recreation Area, NV – November 2014 / Newsmaker Alert / In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the National Park Service has designated a new Explore by Houseboat Wilderness Trail in Lake Mead National Recreation Area so visitors can explore the wilderness by water||while enjoying all the comforts of home.

The Explore by Houseboat trail is one of six new self-guided exploration maps the Lake Mead NRA launched last week. Lake Mead is home to nine wilderness areas, all located in Nevada. They were designated in 2002 to preserve the undeveloped land, so each one retains its primitive character and influence. Part of that designation means that motorized vehicles and bicycles aren’t allowed in the wilderness areas. Fortunately for enthusiasts who appreciate nature and a good four-wheel drive experience or the comforts of home, most of Lake Mead NRA’s wilderness areas are bordered by roads and waterways where the restrictions don’t apply.

Houseboats offer comfortable sleeping accommodations for the whole family, plus amenities like gas grill, fully functional kitchen, bathrooms, water slide, satellite TVs, and sun deck. Houseboat rentals are available at Forever Resorts’ Callville Bay Resort and Marina on expansive Lake Mead, and at Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina on spectacular Lake Mohave. Cruise across the aqua blue lakes, explore the preserved lands, then pull up to a cove and take a day trip into the peaceful backcountry.

Lake Mead is a perfect place for houseboating any time of the year. Many water activities are enjoyed on Lake Mead – swimming, diving, boating and fishing. With 550 miles of pristine shoreline, soaring red rock cliffs, countless bays and beaches and a convenient location within an hour of the entertainment capital of the world, few places can beat the recreation opportunities that await on Lake Mead. Those traveling east from Callville Bay through the narrows will pass Pinto Valley and Jimbilnan Wilderness, areas popular for stunning sandstone and volcanic rock formations.

One of the best-kept secrets in Nevada, Lake Mohave is a pristine desert lake that boasts a 237-mile shoreline and is 67 miles long. Backed by Davis Dam on the Colorado River, Lake Mohave provides its guests the best in boating, fishing, and hiking. The new marina offers long-term and overnight slip rentals for your boat or rent a houseboat, power boat, canoe or kayak. Travel north to see Ireteba and Eldorado Wilderness, areas popular for Desert Bighorn Sheep; or, head south to see Spirit Mountain Wilderness, the spiritual birthplace of the Yuman tribes of the lower Colorado River.
