Houston, TX – November 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / This holiday season, The Houstonian Hotel brings history to life with “Merry Mansions”, a gigantic gingerbread house display celebrating Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, and the estates found along North Post Oak Lane, all decorated in splendid holiday fashion. Opening on November 24 with hundreds of pounds of gingerbread, gumdrops and candies, the authentic display features intricately decorated masterpieces rising up to six feet above the Great Room Lobby’s stone fireplace.

Houstonian Hotel Plans Grand Holiday HappeningsThe exhibit pays tribute to noted architect John Staub, who designed the elegant Bayou Bend mansion for oil heiress Ima Hogg in 1927, and many estate homes for Houston’s elite neighborhoods of River Oaks and Broadacres in the 1920s to 1960s. He designed a handful of country houses where The Houstonian is located today on North Post Oak Lane, including the property’s own Manor House estate, built in 1941 for oilman Thomas Lawrence. The home of Ernest Bel Fay, now the Fay School, is also featured. “We want people to fondly remember the rich and fascinating history in this area of Houston,” said Hotel General Manager Steve Fronterhouse. “We have families tell us stories of living here, riding horses and playing along Buffalo Bayou. I’ve had guests at the Manor House who remember playing together as children in this area,” he said.

A “Merry Mansions Bus Tour” conducted by Mister McKinney’s Historic Houston will depart from The Houstonian and provide an open-air bus venture to Bayou Bend and other historic homes in River Oaks. Guests will hear descriptions and stories of the North Post Oak area, visit the gardens at Bayou Bend and end with a holiday cocktail at the hotel. “Staub’s designs were as distinctive as the clients who commissioned them,” Fronterhouse said. “We want to give a glimpse into the lives of early Houstonians that built this city and established this beautiful area, including Memorial Park. The history behind these mansions contributes greatly to a fuller understanding of our emergence as a premier American city,” he said.

The Houstonian is offering evening entertainment and a delightful menu of holiday themed cocktails and appetizers, served by the cozy fireplace in the Great Room Lobby and in The Bar. “Merry Mansions” at The Houstonian Hotel will be on display daily and is open to the public November 24 through January 1. The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa is located at 111 North Post Oak Lane in Houston. “Merry Mansions Bus Tour” tickets, hotel packages, Christmas brunches and more may be found at www.houstonian.com.
