Lake
Placid, NY – November 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / Mirror
Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid has had a long-time connection
with skiers and riders. That relationship was amplified recently when the
AAA Four Diamond property landed in second place in the USA TODAY/10Best
Readers’ Choice Travel Award contest in the category of Best Ski Hotel.
The
voting placed Mirror Lake Inn #2 in North America. Situated above the shores
of Mirror Lake, it was also voted the #1 ski hotel east of the Rockies.
In
the prestigious top 10, only Hidden Moose Lodge in Montana topped the Mirror
Lake Inn, which has held the AAA Four Diamond distinction for the past
33 consecutive years. The seven-acre resort bested upscale finalists such
as Rustler Lodge in Alta, Utah; Hotel Jerome and Little Nell, both in Aspen;
Fairmont Chateau Whistler in British Columbia; and Stein Eriksen Lodge
and Montage, both at Deer Valley, Utah.

results of the survey can be found here: www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-ski-hotel-2017.

“We’re
very proud of the great job that our employees do to make the Mirror Lake
Inn special and achieve this award,” said resort owner Ed Weibrecht.
“We
are a family of skiers, and many on our staff hit the slopes of Whiteface
Mountain and cross country ski on a regular basis,” added Ed’s wife and
owner, Lisa Weibrecht. “We like to think that we really connect with skiers
and boarders and speak their language.”
That
is never more evident than the “decorations” that greet guests upon check-in.
The Weibrecht’s middle son, Andrew Weibrecht, has won Olympic silver (2014)
and bronze (2010) medals in alpine skiing. The medals are displayed and
await the arrival of hotel guests at the front desk.
To
emphasize the hotel’s ski theme further, Andrew conducts meet-and-greet
events with hotel patrons throughout the year when he’s not in far-flung
locations training or competing on the World Cup tour.
Currently,
this native son of the second best ski hotel in North America is focused
on qualifying for his third trip to the Olympic Winter Games, to be held
in South Korea less than 80 days from now.
Mirror
Lake Inn, an iconic landmark with 131 units, dates back to the early 1900s.
It hosted the Norwegian delegation during the 1932 Winter Olympics. In
addition to being a hotel for skiers owned by skiers, it also offers the
complete package for winter enthusiasts.
All
visitors will enjoy its world class spa and salon, updated a year ago with
new sanctuaries, courtesy of a $1 million infusion. After a day on the
hills and trails, it might be in order to unwind with a therapeutic massage,
or a visit to the spa’s jacuzzi, sauna and pool.
Eventually,
it will be time for dinner, where the Mirror Lake Inn offers three distinct
options. The View Restaurant,
AAA Four Diamond-rated the past 10 years, is Lake Placid’s finest upscale
dining experience and gives the time-honored resort the only Four Diamond
lodging and dining combination in the Northern Adirondacks.
Taste
Bistro and Bar can be found adjacent to The View Restaurant. The trendy
yet unpretentious Taste, with live weekend entertainment, serves elegant
comfort food, led in wintertime by its famous steaming Yankee Pot Roast.
Lake
Placid’s quintessential après ski spot is the hip and friendly Cottage
Café, where the only thing better than the drinks are the skier
stories that can’t be verified. The revelry overlooks the Cottage’s skating
and hockey rinks on Mirror Lake, and includes a glass-enclosed outdoor
deck and fireplace. You can enjoy your favorite beverage there, knowing
that warmth is just a few steps away.
We
suggest ordering the War Horse, an Andrew Weibrecht concoction, taken from
his ski racing knickname. We’ll just tell you the beverage is cold and
tall.
To
recover from a day in the Adirondack outdoors, guests might take repose
in the Inn’s library and living room, sitting by a crackling fire, and
making plans to do it again tomorrow, knowing at day’s end, one of the
best ski hotels in North America – and the best east of the Rockies - will
be ready for their return.
