Albany, NY – March 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announces an educational meeting and two-day survey of Ash trees in the village of Clinton, Oneida County from April 6 - 8, as part of statewide efforts to investigate Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestations. EAB is an invasive species of wood-boring beetle that destroys Ash Trees within two to four years of infestation. EAB has been found in several New York counties and was discovered in the Oneida County community of Rome in 2016. DEC has not confirmed the presence of EAB in the village, but in an effort to protect the state’s Ash trees is proactively educating the public on EAB during the meeting and two-day survey. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)The survey of Ash trees will be held Friday and Saturday, April 7th and 8th, 2017 beginning at 9:00 AM and ending at 3:00 PM. Community collaborators and volunteers should meet at 100 North Park ROW Clinton, NY 13323.

“Emerald Ash Borers, or EAB, are an invasive pest and a threat to New York’s Ash Trees. Volunteers will survey the streets of the village of Clinton looking for signs of the Emerald Ash Borer, collecting the GPS points of each tree, and tagging surveyed trees. The information collected will be shared with the village,” said Judy Drabicki, Regional Director.

Private property will not be surveyed. DEC will ensure that all tags are removed by the end of April.
