Naples Lakes Country Club Reopens
Arnold Palmer Golf Course with Festive Celebration
|
Naples, FL – February 2018 / Newsmaker Alert / Naples Lakes Country Club celebrated the completion of its newly remodeled championship golf course with a festive Grand Re-opening celebration on Saturday, February 17. The day-long event was attended by local golfing celebrities, including Thad Layton, the Arnold Palmer Golf Course Architect who designed the new $3.2 million course. Naples Lakes is the only Arnold Palmer Signature Course in Collier County and was the last course renovation reviewed by Arnold Palmer before his passing. The course was recently nominated for Golf Digest’s 2018 Renovation of the Year Award.

Added Head Golf Professional Jake Myers, PGA, “This was a complete golf course renovation resulting in a basically brand-new golf course. A year in the planning and closed for eight months, major phases included enlarging and leveling all tee complexes, building new greens, improving and expanding the practice facilities, replacing all of the cart paths, and reshaping the fairways. The final result is a pristine golf course, with improved drainage and more character. The course has a similar slope and course rating to the original design while remaining more playable for golfers of all skill levels and a challenge for elite players.”

The entire ‘wall-to-wall’ remodel was completed at once, instead of in phases, which was preferred by the membership, resulting in only one season of interruption. The membership initially met with the Arnold Palmer firm to develop a conceptual plan that would make the new course a more contemporary, ageless course that is fun for golfers of all skill levels.

“To build this course, we overcame many obstacles,” said Bryan Roe, NLCC General Manager. “Two tropical storms, Hurricane Irma, 85 inches of rain (at one time storm surge projected), and the loss of 162 trees. When we expanded a lake on the 11th hole, we discovered solid rock that had to be excavated. During the hurricane, our population dropped to about 25% as some residents took shelter elsewhere and others were already in their summer residences. In spite all these challenges, a great renovation was completed and came in on budget. These improvements have not only added to the home values, but have also enhanced the golfing lifestyle for our very active residents.”

Added Thad Layton, ASGCA, ASLA, VP and Senior Golf Course Architect of the Arnold Palmer Design Company, “Our work at Naples Lakes is some of the finest in our company’s long history. It was a labor of love for our team and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The substantial improvements to both infrastructure and playability were nothing short of miraculous given the challenging weather conditions and compressed schedule. In the end, we delivered a new golf course that is beautiful, strategically interesting, and fun to play, something Mr. Palmer would have been very proud of.”

To maintain our unique identity and designation, the club worked closely with The Arnold Palmer Design Company during the renovation process. Wadsworth Construction Company guided the construction. Since 1958, they have built over 750 golf courses in 44 states, including Augusta National.
