Back To News/PR Index | Naples Lakes Country Club Tracks 526 Species | They enjoy interacting with their environment so much that for the second consecutive year, a team of owners spent about three weeks participating in BioBlitz 2016 in conjunction with Earth Day and International Migratory Bird Day. This involved walking the property and the Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course as members tracked and recorded 526 species of birds, mammals, butterflies, frogs, turtles and plants. In addition to many varieties of heron, owls, squirrels, rabbits, and other friendly creatures, special “finds” included Big Cypress Fox Squirrels, Least Terns (state threatened species), and Wood Stork (a federally threatened species). BioBlitz
is a species counting competition by Audubon International designed to
create awareness among golfers and the community about the environmental
value of the habitats supported by golf courses. This lays the groundwork
for Audubon’s recertification of the property, a process that must be completed
every three years. With more than 200 acres of protected nature preserves
and lakes, NLCC has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
since 2001 and is one of only 114 in Florida. The 526 species recorded
this year was up about 22% over last year’s 430.

Participants filled out a Wildlife Scorecard to document what they had seen with data ultimately forwarded by Higgins to Audubon International to make them eligible for multiple awards. Readers are invited to visit the Naples Lakes Country Club website at NaplesLakesFL.com over the coming weeks for updates from the Audubon Society. “Our members and golfers are genuinely proud of our Audubon certification – which includes special guidelines for landscaping and maintenance – and are eager to help ensure that we maintain this special designation.” Located at 4784 Naples Lakes Boulevard, Naples Lakes Country Club is a private 490-acre gated golf course and country club community where full membership is included with every residence.
