| Fall is Festival Time in the Lake Placid Area | Oktoberfest, Flaming Leaves & Brewfest Highlight the Fun | On top of all of this, autumn is festival season, a time when we say so long to summer, while welcoming winter which will be just a month, or two away. Some of the festivals that are a can’t miss include Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, N.Y., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5; as well as the Flaming Leaves Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12, and third annual Lake Placid Brewfest, Saturday, Oct. 11, both in Lake Placid. In its 23rd year, Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain is fun for the entire family. You don’t even have to be Bavarian to enjoy all of the fun. Of course you’ll come to expect great food, a tall mug of German beer, vendors, rides and music. This year’s musical line up will include favorites die Schlauberger, Spitze, Alpenland Taenzer, Schachtelgbirger Musikanten and 3 Alphorns. And new this year, Herb Liebenhagen. But that’s not all; new events have also been added to the weekend’s lineup to include the Lederhosen 5k Trail Run and 1k Fun Run. During the runs participants will be encouraged to dress up with German flair and race through some of the mountain’s trails. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers and for the best costumes. Participants can pre-register for the 5k run by visiting www.active.com/wilmington-ny/running/trail-run-races/oktoberfest-lederhosen-5k-trail-run-2014. The cost is $50 and those who participate in the race will receive free admission into Oktoberfest, a t-shirt and a pint of beer or soda. Those who pre-register on-line will receive a t-shirt. The 1k cost is $15 and includes a pint glass filled with beer (or soda) and participants will try to finish the race without spilling. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest finishers with the most beer (or soda) left in their pint glass and for best costume. The 1k will start at 1 p.m., Saturday, with registration on site. Admission to this year’s Oktoberfest celebration is $16 for adults. The adult festival admission with the gondola ride is $30. The junior and senior admission is $10, and with the gondola ride the cost is $24. On
Sunday, Oct. 12, watch as our nation’s best compete for the title of U.S.
national champion in the sports of ski jumping and Nordic Combined during
the annual Flaming Leaves Festival. The U.S. national championship event
will also wind down later in the day, when the Nordic Combined athletes
ski 10-kilometers through the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex.
The Blues begins at noon, Saturday, and continues well into Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. each day. Saturday’s musical lineup features Chaz DePaolo, 12-1 p.m. and 2-3 p.m., and Blues for Breakfast, 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. Music on Sunday gets underway with Funky Blu Roots from 12-1 p.m. and 2-3 p.m., and wraps up with Waydown Wailers, 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. The Festival jumping begins Saturday with action on both the 90-meter and 20-meter jumps. Other activities during the festival include extreme tubing, lawns games, craft vendors and tie dying. The annual Flaming Leaves Festival is from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. Admission is $16 for adults and $10 for juniors and seniors. Two-day passes are also available, $27 for adults and $16 for juniors and seniors, while the Olympic Sites Passport will also be honored for admission. From the Olympic Jumping Complex Saturday’s, Oct. 12, festival fun moves to the Olympic Center’s 1932 rink and the Lake Placid Brewfest, from 3-7 p.m. Open to everyone 21 years and older, the Brewfest, in the Olympic Center’s 1932 Rink, will feature over 50 micro-brew companies and more than 100 different kinds of beer from around the country. This year’s festival will feature Ausable Brewing Company, Keeseville, N.Y.; Blue Line Brewery, Saranac Lake, N.Y.; Blue Point Brewing Company Patchogue, N.Y.; Empire Brewing Syracuse, N.Y.; Good Nature Brewing, Hamilton, N.Y.; Great Adirondack Brewing Company, Lake Placid, N.Y.; Ithaca Beer Company, Ithaca, N.Y.; Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, Lake Placid, N.Y.; Old Saratoga Brewing Company, East Saratoga, N.Y.; Otter Creek Brewing Company, Middlebury, Vt.; Plattsburgh Brewing Company, Plattsburgh, N.Y.; Sierra Nevada Brewing, Company, Chico, Calif.; Some Brewing Company, York, Maine; Switchback Brewing Company, Burlington, Vt.; The Shed Brewery, Stowe, Vt. and many more.
