| Wrightsville Beach, NC Oyster Roast Benefits Preservation and Elementary School | “Every dime raised at our first Oyster Roast was spent to replace the back wall of Howell Cottage,” says Sue Bulluck, chamber president. “This coming year, we will continue to work on our roof, but will be sharing our proceeds to help address needs identified by the Wrightsville Elementary PTA.” On the menu will be an estimated 40 bushels of fresh local oysters, shrimp plates, sides, sauces, hushpuppies, desserts, drinks, and optional bar. Thanks to the generosity of local sponsors, tickets are only $40 per person and are available at Robert’s Grocery, South End Surf Shop, Wrightsville Beach Museum, or online at www.Wrightsville.org. Ticket sales are limited. “The chamber has been out front on FEMA flood insurance changes and appeals,” says Bulluck. “One of our top agenda items for 2016 is a vision plan addressing reasonable redevelopment requirements for the business community in the event of a severe hurricane. We dodged a bullet with Joaquin. Under current rules, the business structures on the island could not be rebuilt to meet the needs of residents, businesses, and tourists.” Howell Cottage is located
in Historic Square, off Salisbury Street near Town Hall on Wrightsville
Beach. Historic Square is also home to Myers Cottage, built in 1907, and
Palmgren-O’Quinn house, built in 1946.
Historic Howell Cottage, Home of the Wrightsville Beach Chamber and Visitor Center Wrightsville Beach has over 20 historically designated properties, representing a span of Carolina coastal living and architecture from 1907 to 1955. Wrightsville Beach Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization, “serving the interests of citizens, tourists, and the business community for over 30 years,” says Bulluck.
