Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred“The Chamber Officers and Directors are delighted that Commissioner Manfred has accepted our invitation, and are very pleased to continue the theme of welcoming home and honoring local people who have made significant accomplishments during their careers.

Commissioner Manfred is by far an excellent example of that tradition,” she said. Commissioner Manfred graduated from Rome Free Academy, as Valedictorian, in 1976. He worked at Revere Copper Products in Rome as a summer employee while at college during the summers of 1977, 78 and 79. His father started at Revere in 1954 as an engineer after graduating from Clarkson. Commissioner Manfred’s mother retired from the Rome school system after many years as a teacher.

At the 2004 Meeting, Commissioner Manfred was guest of his RFA classmate, Anthony E. Darcangelo, who was Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors that year. Tony continued his service to the community as Rome City Councilor representing the sixth ward. He passed away in 2012. Carol said that his wife, Shelly, was instrumental in securing the Commissioner for this year’s Business Meeting.

In addition to Commissioner Manfred being guest speaker, the Business Meeting is an annual opportunity for Chamber members and guests to hear reports on various activities and accomplishments that have taken place during the past year. Additionally, the following members will be recognized for specific achievements:

Last year, 2014 Olympic Bronze Medalist Erin Hamlin of Remsen was the Chamber’s guest speaker. Others from Rome who have recently been featured as guest speakers include Anthony Manuele, Director of Technical Insights and Product Development for MillerCoors in 2013; Patrick Morin, President and COO of BrightHammer LLC in 2012; Steve Evans, Men’s Head Basketball Coach at Le Moyne College in 2010; Joseph Boardman, President of Amtrak, in 2009; and Commissioner Manfred who in 2004 was Executive Vice President of Major League Baseball.

Commissioner Manfred’s visit to Rome coincides with the Chamber’s Annual Honor America Days Celebration – the Parade will be held on Saturday, July 25, and followed later that evening by the Symphoria Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert at Fort Stanwix National Monument, accompanied by cannon fire, the ringing of church bells, and fireworks.
