The Upcoming Year in Sports, by Timothy Schneider, Publisher, SportsTravel
|
Los Angeles, CA – January 2016 / Newsmaker Alert / The sports-event industry exists in a state of constant motion, and 2016 promises to be an exciting year for event organizers and the destinations that host sporting events. The new year brings with it a number of noteworthy events that reflect the vitality of our industry and that will have a demonstrable and lasting effect on destinations large and small.
|
The Upcoming Year in Sports, by Timothy Schneider, Publisher, SportsTravelWe look forward to providing coverage on the planning of many of those events in SportsTravel, starting with this month’s cover story on Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California. This milestone NFL championship will feature numerous innovations including a new Super Bowl Opening Night, which will replace the traditional media day and be held at a more convenient time for fans; promotions tailored to reflect the game’s history and the Bay Area’s culture; and major fan-interactive components tied to technology. For more, please see the story starting on page 10.

Throughout the year, we will also be highlighting events that reflect not only the strength of the sports-event industry, but breakthroughs in event hosting that bode well for destinations of all sizes. Here is just a sampling of our coverage ahead:

In February, we will turn our attention to motorsports, previewing the Daytona 500 and the renovations at Daytona International Speedway, as well as the Indy 500, which this year celebrates the 100th running of the legendary race. In the March issue, we will turn our attention to the IAAF World Indoor Championships, which will be staged at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. This is the first time in nearly 30 years – only the second time in history – that the track-and-field event will be held in the United States.

The May/June issue will highlight the Copa America Centenario, which will be held in the United States for the first time. The 2016 event is the centennial edition of Copa America and will feature 16 teams from North, Central and South America playing matches in 10 cities across the United States. In August, look for our coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games, which will be held in Rio de Janiero, August 5–21, the first time that the Games will take place in South America.

The September/October issue will focus on the revamped World Cup of Hockey, which will be held September 17–October 1 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The international hockey championship will feature eight teams and has the potential to be a long-lasting special event that the NHL will grow in years to come.

Whether it’s reporting on what happens behind the scenes at the world’s most important sporting events in SportsTravel or curating unique programming and networking opportunities at the TEAMS Conference & Expo, we look forward to continuing to serve as a primary resource for the sports industry during the coming year. Be sure your calendar for 2016 includes TEAMS ’16, the world’s leading conference devoted solely to the sports-event industry, which will be held September 26–29 in Atlantic City.
