Back To News/PR Index | | Old Hickory Barbecue, Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn keep barbecue spotlight on Owensboro | The popular regional magazine named the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn and Old Hickory Barbecue to its list of “The South’s Top 50 Barbecue Joints.” No other Kentucky restaurants made the cut. Also, the Southern Food and Beverage Museum has chosen two artifacts from the Moonlite for its permanent exhibit about barbeque called “Trail of Smoke and Fire.” Southern Living saluted
the two Owensboro restaurants for serving “Kentucky barbecue at its best,”
drawing special attention to their smoked mutton and to burgoo, Kentucky’s
signature barbecue stew. The Foreman family opened the Old Hickory in 1918,
and the Moonlite opened in 1949. Hugh (Pappy) and Catherine Bosley bought
it in 1963, and the third Bosley generation now is on the scene.
Curators at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum asked to display Pappy Bosley’s cleaver and butcher knife, plus an original menu from 1963-1965 and historic photos. The Bosley family estimates that Pappy Bosley used his knife and cleaver to butcher nearly a quarter of a million mutton carcasses. The tools date to before World War II and are from the Village Blacksmith Company in Watertown, Wisconsin. “Owensboro has a well-deserved reputation for barbecue, and the Old Hickory and the Moonlite are a huge part of the attention Owensboro gets. Our International Bar-B-Q Festival in May and the annual parish picnic schedule from June through September add to that reputation,” said Shannon Wetzel, executive director of Visit Owensboro. “What surprises many first-time visitors is how broad the whole food scene is here.
