Wrightsville
Beach, NC – August 2014 / Newsmaker Alert / What makes a great
beach town? National Geographic Traveler contributor Bruce Schoenfeld
recently wrote that a great beach town—in addition to being clean, picturesque
and spacious—should be “timeless.” He went on to recognize Wrightsville
Beach, North Carolina in his roundup of “Last
Best American Beach Towns” (National Geographic Traveler, June/July
2014).
Though Wrightsville
Beach has seen many changes over the past 100-plus years, it remains
an idyllic beach town where vacationers can still enjoy nature’s beauty
and life’s simple pleasures. This is cause for celebration for residents
and visitors who relish Wrightsville’s easy island vibe. Each year in late
August during its annual Lumina Daze
Celebration, Wrightsville Beach honors its timelessness by recalling
days-gone-by. On Sunday, August 24th, a nostalgic evening of wholesome
fun is in store for those who attend the 18th Lumina Daze Celebration at
Blockade
Runner Resort (275 Waynick Blvd., Wrightsville Beach). The evening’s
festivities will transport attendees back in time with historical displays,
presentations, music, dancing, food and beverages.

Lumina Daze is reminiscent
of Wrightsville Beach during a time when famous big band musicians such
as Guy Lombardo, Cab Calloway and Tommy Dorsey performed at the legendary
Lumina Pavilion, an island landmark for 68 years until it was torn down
in 1973. To help set the mood, three bands will provide live music: The
Wilmington Big Band orchestra (swing), The Imitations (beach music classics),
and The Dixieland All-Stars (jazz). As in years past, a silent auction
and a live auction will benefit the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History.
Auction items include an assortment of fine art, services, and specialties
from local businesses. Wrightsville Beach Museum’s book on the history
of the beach, Tide and Time, will be available for purchase.
Want to go? The 18th Annual
Lumina Daze Celebration takes place on Sunday, August 24 from 5:00 p.m.
until 9:00 p.m. at the Blockade
Runner Resort, which marks its 50th anniversary this year. Arrive a
few days early so you can enjoy the weekend relaxing on the beach, splashing
in the surf, paddling the marshlands, fishing off the pier, catching waves,
beachcombing and savoring fresh seafood. As Sunday evening approaches visitors
are invited to join in the celebration of Wrightsville Beach’s heritage
with old-fashioned fun. Tickets ($15 each) are available at the door during
the event, or in advance at the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History (303
W. Salisbury Street, Wrightsville Beach), and online at www.wbmuseum.com.

North Carolina’s historic river district and the island beaches of
Carolina
