NACS: C-Stores Open New Doors
|
Buc-ee’s, Parker’s and Wawa are among the
convenience retailers with new locales
|
Alexandria, VA – May 2019 / Newsmaker Alert / Regional convenience chains continue to open new, larger, flashier stores and often in areas off their traditional paths. Texas-based Buc-ee’s just opened its 36th outlet, this one in Melissa, Texas, just north of Dallas, and Wawa, the famous Philadelphia-area c-store chain, just opened its first Miami location.

Buc-ee’s newest Texas store offers its famous Texas Round Up barbeque, a vast selection of beef jerky, homemade fudge and Beaver Nuggets in 50,000 square feet, plus spotless restrooms and the numerous fuel pumps that have made Buc-ee’s popular.

“We look forward to people stopping at Buc-ee’s, which is the best choice for the highway traveler,” said Jeff Nadalo, general counsel for Buc-ee’s Ltd. “Come see the world’s cleanest bathrooms, buy some cheap gas, and enjoy our excellent food and large selection of merchandise.”

Based in Lake Jackson, Texas, Buc-ee’s boasts the largest convenience store in the world. Located in New Braunfels, Texas, it is 68,000-square-feet and features 120 fueling positions, 83 toilets, 31 cash registers, four Icee machines and 80 fountain dispensers.

Meanwhile, Wawa expects to have more stores in Florida than it has in New Jersey or Pennsylvania by 2021. The newest store features the chain’s first-even “walk-up windows,” which complements the casual Miami lifestyle, reports Philly.com.

“We brought in guava pastries, guava cheese pastries, cafecitos,” said David Prevost, Wawa’s director of store operations in South Florida. “Croquetas are in the works [but] we are still all hoagies. We still are coffee and soft pretzels. We do have a cheesesteak.”

“We’re trying to be innovative,” said Chris Gheysens, CEO, Wawa. “We’re sort of that small hometown Philadelphia company, but I think people get a sense we’re growing.”

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Meijer has just unveiled its Express convenience store at Knapp’s Corner in front of Meijer’s local supercenter. The store has 24 fuel pumps, a large parking area and a variety of fresh foods, such as pizza, sushi, rotisserie chicken and a large coffee area. There’s also free wi-fi and a recharging station with a seating area, according to a Michigan television station.

Most importantly, Meijer Express is offering complimentary ice cream for kids every day. A Purple Cow soft-serve ice cream machine with free mini-cones hearkens back to the days when founder Fred Meijer distributed coupons for free ice cream in stores. The company has approximately 200 gas stations.

In the South, Parker’s 57th location and the fifth in Pooler, Georgia, near Savannah, has opened on 9.2 acres and includes ordering kiosks and seating for up to 20 customers, reports The Shelby Report.

Parker’s Kitchen serves fresh, hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken tenders, mac ‘n’ cheese, breakfast biscuits and other Southern dishes, all prepared onsite by the store’s staff. The newest location also features self-checkout technology, truck parking, 16 fueling positions, seven diesel fueling positions and marine fuel.

“Our award-winning Southern-inspired food, which is available for breakfast, lunch or dinner, is extremely popular…and is an ideal alternative to traditional fast food,” said Greg Parker, founder and CEO.

The new store is part of a larger strategy to expand Parker’s footprint from the company’s Savannah headquarters to Charleston, South Carolina.
