Things You Didn’t Know About
the
National Railroad Museum
|
Green
Bay, WI – June 2019 / Newsmaker Alert / At
the
National Railroad Museum,
we talk a lot about our exhibits and educate our guests on the rolling
stock we have for them to view, as well as railroad history, but there
are a few things you might not know about the museum.
-
The museum
was designated by Congress as the National Railroad Museum in 1958 (founded
1956). We are the one and only National Railroad Museum in the United States.
-
Though
we are a national museum, we do not receive local, State or Federal funding.
The money raised from general admission, fundraising events like Day Out
with Thomas, POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride, The Great Pumpkin Train, Bunny
Train, Rails & Ales, and donations is what supports the museum’s continued
operation.
-
All of
our pieces of rolling stock (locomotives, passenger and freight cars) are
on a restoration schedule to return them to the condition they were when
they first entered service. Depending on the work that needs to be done,
it can take up to two years to complete the restoration of one piece.
-
Through
our general admission, fundraising events and educational programming,
the museum sees over 100,000 visitors each year.
-
The museum
is also an amazing rental space for weddings, receptions, corporate events,
and birthday parties.
Byline:
Dan Liedtke, Curator and Operations Manager (view
staff) for the National Railroad Museum. For questions about exhibits

Founded
in 1956, by community volunteers in Green Bay, the National
Railroad Museum educates the public through programs, exhibits,
and preservation projects about the ongoing impact of railroads in our
lives. Visiting the National Railroad Museum offers an opportunity to explore
our railroad heritage. The Museum (www.nationalrrmuseum.org)
is one of the oldest and largest institutions of its kind in the United
States.
