![]() | ![]() | The
goal was to make campground owners aware of the opportunity this rare event
provided the outdoor industry, and to spread the word among campers, astronomy
enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a unique eclipse experience. The effort
paid off. Among campgrounds on Campspot, there was a 81% increase in reservations
that included April 8th year over year. Even more astounding was that Campspot
campgrounds also saw a 347% increase from reservations that fell over the
same Monday last year.
![]() Campspot’s press coverage, which had a reach of 1.75 Billion across 368 pieces of earned placements including Forbes, CNN travel, Thrillist, AARP, and The Wall Street Journal, is evidence of their success in spreading the word. Campgrounds on Campspot took advantage of the opportunity, regardless of where they were in relation to the path of totality, with nearly 10% more parks logging reservations this year over last. This also suggests that many opened early or specifically for the event. “We knew that campgrounds were ideally suited to help give eclipse seekers an incredible, front-row experience,” said Erin Stender, CMO of Campspot. “We were very intentional about helping parks understand the opportunity, equipping them with resources to leverage the event, and then promoting the eclipse to campers across the country.” As part of a suite of educational materials the company created throughout the course of the campaign, Campspot held a series of webinars for campground owners and operators and published a campground owner’s guide about how to leverage the eclipse and other celestial events to draw visitors to your park. They also provided a printable kid’s kit with eclipse related activities for campgrounds to have on hand during the week of the event. “It’s important for campgrounds to understand that the opportunity does not end here,” said Stender. “Astrotourism presents an ongoing opportunity for parks that they can promote year-round. We encourage parks to include a calendar of sky-related events and activities, including full moons, meteor showers, asteroid events, planetary events, and more.” To learn more about how to use astrotourism to drive revenue, download the Campspot Astrotourism guide.
