Farmington, NY – July 2019 / Newsmaker Alert / Officials at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) have announced that the New York Derby and New York Oaks, which were both originally part of this Saturday’s racing card that was canceled due to excessive heat predicted for the region, will be rescheduled for Wednesday, July 24.

This past Saturday’s racing card was canceled in the best interest of the equine population, employees and other workers instrumental in the operation of racing with the region under an Excessive Heat Warning and heat index values projected to potentially reach 110 degrees.

‘We look forward to showcasing some of the top New York-breds next Wednesday in the Derby and Oaks without the extreme weather conditions that could potentially affect the safety of our equine athletes, associates and other racing personnel,’ said Chris Riegle, president and general manager. Currently, weather in the area is projected to be mostly sunny and in the upper 70’s next Wednesday.

This year will mark the 47th running of the $150,000 New York Derby. The Derby is the second leg of the Big Apple Triple for New York-bred 3-year-olds, which began Monday, May 27 with the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park and concludes with the Albany Stakes at Saratoga on Friday, August 23.

Blindwillie McTell is expected to be the morning line favorite for the Derby when entries are taken again for the race. He won the Mike Lee Stakes in his most recent start and has been no worse than second in five career starts, which includes three stakes victories.

The 33rd running of the $75,000 New York Oaks for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies will also be contested on Wednesday.

First race post time on Wednesday, July 24 will be 1:10 p.m. Racing gates will open at 11:30 a.m. The New York Derby T-Shirt giveaway that was originally set for this Saturday will also move to Wednesday starting when racing gates open.
