Claremont,
CA – September 2025 / NewsmakerAlert: Mid-century magic meets
modern discovery as Claremont
Heritage presents its 43rd
Annual Home Tour Weekend, October 10–12, 2025. Sponsored in
part by Discover Claremont,
this three-day celebration of architecture, culture, and preservation invites
visitors to experience the city’s modernist treasures—and to stay in one
of Southern California’s most vibrant destinations.
The weekend kicks off Friday
with a Claremont Bus and Walking Tour led by pop culture humorist
Charles Phoenix. Known for celebrating classic and kitschy American life
and style, Phoenix brings his trademark wit and storytelling to this three-hour
tour.
On Friday evening, Sunset
Magazine partners with Claremont Heritage to present the Sunset Reception
at the historic M.H. Cowen House, designed by Cliff May, father of the
California Ranch house. Built in 1939, the Hacienda Ranch recently won
the 2025 Preservation and Restoration Award from the California Preservation
Foundation.
Saturday highlights include
a Places of Worship Tour, featuring four architecturally significant
sites designed by Richard Neutra, Edward Durell Stone, Theodore Criley
(with art direction from Millard Sheets) and Culver Heaton. The tour is
presented as part of Docomomo National Tour Day, an annual celebration
of modern architecture and design.

Other events include a lunch
talk from historian and author Alan Hess on “Claremont Modern,” and an
exhibition and reception titled “The Search for Organic Architecture,”
honoring Foster Rhodes Jackson, a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé
who designed over 800 modern structures in Claremont and surrounding towns.
On Sunday, the signature
Home Tour, “Preserving the Recent Past,” opens doors to seven unique Claremont
residences that showcase mid-century modern and ranch styles. Highlights
include a Jo Paul Rognstad-designed masterwork, and the homes of Charles
Phoenix and management pioneer Peter Drucker. Rognstad would later design
18 skyscrapers that transformed Honolulu’s skyline. This docent-led tour
runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and visitors should plan on up to four hours
to visit all seven homes.
Make it a weekend escape.
After each day’s events, visitors can explore Claremont’s tree-lined Village
with its boutique shops, chef-driven dining, and inviting patios. Stroll
the California Botanic Garden, browse The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona
College, or linger over Sunday brunch before heading home. Hotel rooms
for this weekend are limited; check availability at DiscoverClaremont.com.
