New Hanover County Commissioners Proclaim May 4-10 as National Travel and Tourism Week in New Hanover County
|
Wilmington, NC – May 2025 / NewsmakerAlert: In recognition of the important role that tourism plays in our community, the New Hanover County Commissioners approved a Proclamation during their April 21 meeting that designates May 4-10, 2025 as National Travel & Tourism Week in New Hanover County.

Celebrated annually in May, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) was created by Congress in 1983 to elevate the message that travel is vital to moving America’s economy forward. 2025 marks the 42nd anniversary of NTTW with a week of activities that spotlight the essential role that travel plays in stimulating economic growth, cultivating vibrant communities, creating quality job opportunities, inspiring new businesses, and elevating the quality of life for Americans.

To kick off National Travel and Tourism Week locally, the Wilmington and Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau [CVB] will host its annual Travel Rally Breakfast and Celebration on Wednesday, May 7 at the Wilmington Convention Center. During this year’s program, the CVB will unveil New Hanover County’s first-ever Tourism Destination Master Plan. Completed earlier this year, the plan outlines future opportunities to align tourism development with the growth of the community, casting a comprehensive vision for our future. Individual beach community plans have also been developed to more acutely identify opportunities and needs within each town. In keeping with tradition, the travel rally will conclude on a celebratory note by announcing recipients of this year’s Tourism Star and Jane Peterson Tourism Legacy awards.

“Along with our travel partners, the CVB looks forward to kicking off National Travel and Tourism Week with a salute to the more than 6,790 tourism and hospitality industry employees who work in New Hanover County. Each employee plays an important role in creating a welcoming and desirable destination for our visitors,” states Kim Hufham, president/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority. “This year’s Travel Rally program will also focus on the state of tourism in our county and provide an overview of findings from the Tourism Destination Master Plan research, along with insights into what the future holds for our Destination on the RISE.”
