Kure Beach to Welcome 750 Cyclists as 2025 Cycle NC ''Mountains to Coast'' 450-Mile Bike Tour Ends at Fort Fisher State Historic Site

Hosted by North Carolina Amateur Sports (NCAS), Cycle North Carolina was developed to promote North Carolina’s scenic beauty, heritage tourism, visitor attractions, historic sites, state parks, fitness, healthy lifestyles, and the benefits of bicycling to individuals and our state. During the past 25 years, Cycle North Carolina has stopped overnight in more than 100 North Carolina towns and visited over 800 North Carolina communities. This is the first year for Fort Fisher to host the ride’s finish line. While some riders will camp overnight, others will stay at the Golden Sands Oceanfront Hotel in Carolina Beach. In the evening, Cycle NC will offer shuttles for campers who wish to dine at restaurants on the island.

“Cycle NC is thrilled to be working with Wilmington and Beaches CVB to bring the ‘Mountains to Coast’ Ride back to New Hanover County. This is the 26th edition of the ride and will be the fourth time New Hanover County has hosted the finish line (2000, 2005, 2012),” states Chip Hofler, executive director of North Carolina Amateur Sports. “Finishing at the iconic beach in Fort Fisher, with the rocky landscape, windswept oak trees, and sandy beach, amidst the backdrop of one of North Carolina’s historic landmarks, will provide an unforgettable and unique finish line for this year’s event. The route will pass through Wilmington as well, showcasing the area’s rich film history and vibrant downtown. After seven days of cycling from the mountains, our participants will be excited to end in such a beautiful location.”

During this year’s tour, bicyclists will experience numerous instances of North Carolina’s unique topography including mountains, ample farmland, several lakes, creeks and winding rivers. With scenic stops along back roads, the “Mountains to Coast” ride is the highlight of the year for many cyclists from across the nation. This year’s youngest cyclist to ride for the entire week is 12 years old, while the oldest participant is 88 years old.

Cycle North Carolina will begin its full-service, cross-state ride on October 5th from Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure. Over the course of the week, riders will bike an average of 67 miles per day. Additional overnight stays are planned in Lincolnton, Kannapolis, Asheboro, Fuquay-Varina, Goldsboro and Wallace. The route will also pass through many other towns and communities along the way, including Rutherfordton, Spindale, Ellenboro, Shelby, Catawba, Troutman, Mt Ulla, Gold Hill, Denton, Ramseur, Bear Creek, Moncure, Benson, Four Oaks, Mount Olive, Kenansville, Warsaw, Rose Hill, Burgaw, Rocky Point, Wilmington, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, as they make their way to the finish line at the 1921 Fort Fisher Monument.

Route into New Hanover County:

After a rest stop at Paul’s Famous Hot Dogs in Rocky Point, the route will head south and enter New Hanover County in the Castle Hayne area. It will then utilize 6th St, 10th St and 5th St to get through downtown Wilmington before holding its next rest stop at Greenfield Lake Park. It then will head further south, connecting with River Road and the last rest stop will be at River Road Park. After going over the bridge to Carolina Beach, the route will stay on Dow Road until eventually popping out on Fort Fisher Blvd in Kure Beach. From there it heads south to the finish line.
